SHLOMO BUCHLER:
I want to make films that are a delicate balance of visual beauty and terse emotional story lines. One of my dislikes with some films is their passivity. I enjoy films dealing with real emotional gristle that requires an audience to really sink their teeth into and wrest away the true meaning.
I made Soledad with the intent of dealing with certain issues that carry a certain "weighty-ness", and to touch on some topics that may be somewhat difficult to put aside after watching them. Think of Travis Bickle--Robert Deniro's character in Scorcese's Taxi Driver--this character was so complex. When I watched this film for the first time I was left with this ambivalence, asking myself why do I like this character? I love this film and others like it because they leave me with a strange unsettling feeling that I must struggle to contend with.
